We, the Golden Bay midwives, are employed by the Nelson Marlborough District
Health Board. We are based at the Golden Bay Community Hospital. We provide a 24 hour LMC (Lead Maternity
Carer) service which includes free pregnancy testing, and pregnancy counselling, antenatal classes, antenatal and postnatal
visits in the unit or at home, and birthing services which are tailored to the family's needs.
We are committed to
supporting womens choice and therefore support waterbirths and homebirths. We also support any practices which may be helpful
during pregnancy, labour and birth and postnatally, such as homoeopathic remedies, massage, and various forms of body
work which can have a positive influence in pregnancy and birth.
Women who choose to birth in the Unit stay with their partner in one of the two rooms until
the baby is born and afterwards until returning home.
Midwives are specialists in normal pregnancy, birth and in the care of the newborn and
are trained to deal with any complication or emergency should one arise. We work closely with both specialists and GPs and
refer to them if necessary.
Our philosophy is that the antenatal care relationship with pregnant women and their families
forms the foundation for the normalisation of pregnancy and birth. This has been shown to be significant in minimising the
need for medical assistance.
Carol, Pamela and Paula enjoy and are committed to their roles as midwives and as members
of the wider Golden Bay community.
